ALIGARH : The Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University organized a three-day short-term training programme on “Flood Modelling Using HEC-RAS”.
The Chief guest, Mr. Mustaque Ahmad (Engineer-in-Chief and Head, Irrigation and Water Resources Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh) discussed the flood situation recently faced by the eastern UP regions and highlighted the losses in the agricultural sector . He stressed the need for taking more research on flood.
Prof. Mohammad Sharif (Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi), Prof. Rakesh Kumar (Sharda University, Noida) and Dr. Azaz IK Pathan (SVNIT Surat) were the other resource persons.
Prof. Mohammad Altamash Siddiqui (Dean, Faculty of Engineering) said that awareness about natural disasters like floods is very crucial. He said flood is one of the most prominent natural hazards causing tremendous losses in terms of human lives and monetary loss to the people and the state.
Earlier, welcoming the guests, Prof. Abdul Baqi (Chairperson, Department of Civil Engineering) said that the frequency of floods is higher than any other natural calamities in India and more than 40 Million hectares of the total 329 Million hectares geographical area of the country is flood-prone. They have catastrophic impacts on lives and property and the average annual flood damage during the last two decades amounted to Rs. 4745 crores.
He said that the training program will help the students in developing computational capabilities to numerically model floods.
Outlining the objectives of the workshop, one of the Coordinators, Prof Javed Alam said that the government and citizens must work together to formulate ways to prevent floods.
Another coordinator, Prof Saif Said presented a brief review of the recent flood situation in the country and the strength of HEC-RAS software for the analysis of flood and its modelling.
Dr. Ajmal Hussain, Department of Civil Engineering proposed a vote of thanks.
The participants and organizers also took the ‘integrity pledge’ observing the “Vigilance Awareness Week”.
Certificates of participation were given to all the participants in the valedictory function.
