Penn State University’s Women’s ice hockey wins College Hockey America Championship

No. 10-ranked Penn State defeated Mercyhurst 2-1 in overtime on March 4 at Pegula Ice Arena for the Nittany Lions’ first College Hockey America (CHA) title.

The victory sends Penn State to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.

Penn State jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the second period with a goal by Eleri MacKay with assists from Julie Gough and Izzy Heminger. Mercyhurst tied the game with a goal with 8:22 left in the second period.

With 14:41 left in the first overtime period, a goal by Gough secured the CHA title for Penn State.

Penn State will head to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The Nittany Lions will take on No. 8 Quinnipiac in the first round of the NCAA tournament Columbus regional at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 9.
